Future Green 5 Must Reads

Hey there sustainable food advocates – this edition is about conclusions and exciting beginnings!

Before I get to the 5 Must-Reads we’ve selected for you this week, just a quick reminder about the upcoming free training I’m hosting next week. More about the training here!

Now back to the newsletter.

Here’s the last 2024 newsletter (back in January 2025). Also starting in January, is our very own set of super Tuesdays via my Train-the-Trainer course in Carbon Literacy for food and drink businesses! Course familiarisation is on Tuesday, 7th January, and the training sessions start the following Tuesday, 14th January - and for three consecutive Tuesdays after that. Sign up while places are still available!

🎤 Running a successful business AND helping the planet, are compatible things. My message to a global audience at the 25th Hong Kong Forum.

🥗 3: pieces of data per dish. The key to understanding and presenting to customers your products’ carbon impact, via our Menu Carbon Labelling Programme.

🐟 Bluefin tuna: 1% of the total tuna catch globally, but two-thirds of its monetary value say some experts. The bluefin is a mostly wild (and exhaustible) resource.

🏡 50%: amount of their land plot some Dutch suburbanites must pledge for food growing, in return for eased planning rules on the style of their homes.

🌏 29: COPs since meetings started in 1995. The Paris Agreement’s aim to limit global warming to fewer than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, still looks a distant dream.

DON’T WAIT FOR POLITICS: BE YOUR OWN SUSTAINABILITY LEADER

At the 25th Hong Kong Forum, I advised that businesses can’t afford to wait for top-down leadership on sustainability. It might simply take too long.

CRUNCH! OUR CARBON LABELLING TOOL GRADES YOUR DISH IMPACTS

Watch our doodle-themed video on using three pieces of easily-gathered data to label per-dish carbon output. Then train your teams and aim lower!

SADLY, THE WORLD IS BETTER AT CATCHING TUNA, THAN FARMING IT.

Improving fish stocks perhaps lured ocean megafauna bluefin tuna back to the English coast. Fish population baselines have shrunk, so don’t assume good news.

JUST A SMALL HIGH-RISE BALCONY? GO DUTCH, GROW SOME VEG!

Subsistence agriculture on smallholdings next to the house was common in pre-industrial communities. In one pioneering Dutch suburb, it’s back as a planning condition.

ADD ‘ACTION’ AS WELL AS CAMERAS AND LIGHTS, AT COP TALKS!

Leading voices want: fossil-fuel lobbyists barred from COP talks; meetings held more regularly; and a shift from talk to action. We agree.

Sustainable Seafood, Food Tech, and Future Trends – February Insights

Future Green 5 Must Reads Hey there sustainable food advocates – as it’s Valentine’s Day, we should mention Hong Kong’s love affair with seafood. Consumption is twice the world average at 71.2 kilos annually, says WWF. We won’t wean consumers off the stuff, but the food service sector can and should offer sustainable varieties. We share what we learned from our invited experts at Tuesday’s (11th Feb) Members Monthly Meetup. As we gear up for UnConference 3.0 Our Food, Our Future on 21st March...
