Future Green 5 Must Reads

Hey there sustainable food advocates – as it’s Valentine’s Day, we should mention Hong Kong’s love affair with seafood. Consumption is twice the world average at 71.2 kilos annually, says WWF. We won’t wean consumers off the stuff, but the food service sector can and should offer sustainable varieties. We share what we learned from our invited experts at Tuesday’s (11th Feb) Members Monthly Meetup.

As we gear up for UnConference 3.0 Our Food, Our Future on 21st March – the latest edition of our in-person meeting of minds, specially-designed for food and drink professionals – we’re thrilled to announce Prof. Chris Elliott as our keynote speaker on how tech is transforming food sustainability.

🤖 UnConference 3.0 preview. Agriculture is going through its own ‘industrial revolution’ as digital technology – including AI – is being used to drive food sustainability, traceability, and integrity.

🐟 By sourcing seafood responsibly, you can support the following UN Sustainable Development Goals: No. 12 ‘responsible consumption and production’; No. 14 ‘life below water’.

🧴 15.5 million. Number of plastic bottles collected for recycling in a single year at LINK REIT properties. Beyond the headline numbers, this landlord developer found that rationalising what gets collected on-site and where, is a big plus in the sustainability drive.

🥦 Power of 3. Trends for 2025 in the alternative protein sector. Functional and health-orientated foods; fewer processed products and more wholefoods; and honouring traditional cuisines but in vegetarian or vegan form.

🌿 Similar to a plant, but something different. Microalgae could revolutionise human nutrition: if scientists can swap the green hue and boost the taste.

UNCONFERENCE 3.0 – OUR FOOD OUR FUTURE: INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS IN ACTION

We’re thrilled the UK’s Prof. Chris Elliott, a world leader on food safety and microbiology, is our keynote speaker on how tech is transforming the food system.

HK consumers love seafood. The food sector can give them more sustainable choices, such as albacore tuna, Chilean sea bass, indoor-farmed grouper or Pacific salmon.

IT’S OK TO LOOK AT LOW-TECH THINGS FIRST, LIKE BETTER RECYCLING

UnConference focuses on solutions, not just challenges. Last year insights included LINK REIT’s recycling ‘tweaks’. Join us in March, featuring another fab landlord, developer SWIRE PROPERTIES.

ALTERNATIVE PROTEIN’S A MATURING MARKET. CONSUMERS WANT MORE FROM IT

The alternative-protein sector has moved from the ‘animal substitution’ phase to an era when consumers are holding alternative protein makers to ever-higher health standards.

MICROALGAE PROTEIN. IT’S NOT EASY BEING (ACTUALLY) GREEN. ASK KERMIT.

Microalgae: a potential human nutrition revolution, cutting links between land space needed for food, and output. Scientists are still working on the taste and look part.
