Future Green 5 Must Reads

Hey sustainability change makers,

Future Green turns seven this September! ๐ŸŽ‰

Reaching this milestone has given me a chance to look back at how much has changed since we started in 2019 not only for Future Green, but across the wider food and sustainability landscape.

What strikes me most is how sustainability has become increasingly embedded in the everyday workings of food businesses. Itโ€™s showing up in how organisations measure carbon, design menus, source ingredients, manage energy and respond to risks across increasingly complex supply chains.

This weekโ€™s stories capture that evolution brilliantly. The NHS is translating carbon goals into practical guidance for foodservice, while one of the worldโ€™s oldest cheddar makers is embracing heat-pump technology to cut energy use. Beyond individual businesses, worsening wildfires and food safety concerns are reminders that what happens in our kitchens and supply chains is deeply connected to much bigger environmental and societal systems.

Seven years in, there is still so much to learn, challenge and change, and thatโ€™s what keeps this work exciting.

I hope you enjoy this weekโ€™s reads! ๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿ”ฅ CLIMATE RESILIENCE: A WORLD ON FIRE

Forest fires are becoming more frequent and destructive. WRI reports fire-driven tree-cover loss has more than doubled since 2001, highlighting the urgent need for prevention and adaptation.

๐Ÿง€ FOOD INNOVATION: OLD CHEESE, NEW TECHNOLOGY

What happens when a cheesemaker dating back to 1833 embraces clean technology? Barberโ€™s Farmhouse Cheesemakers uses innovative heat pumps to halve electricity use and significantly cut carbon emissions.

๐Ÿฅฌ FOOD SAFETY: SO, ARE WE EATING LETTUCE AGAIN?

After the largest recorded U.S. Cyclospora outbreak, concerns around fresh produce are growing, raising important questions about food safety, traceability and resilience across increasingly complex supply chains.

Future Green 5 Must Reads Hey sustainability change makers, What does a resilient food system actually look like when the world around it keeps changing? This weekโ€™s stories offer a few different answers. It means knowing more about where our food comes from, understanding whatโ€™s happening behind the label, and recognising how changing ecosystems can create new opportunities alongside unexpected challenges. It also means building stronger communities where people working across food and...

Future Green 5 Must Reads Hey sustainability change makers, Over the past few weeks, I've been having some fascinating conversations about facilitation. One question keeps coming up: what actually makes someone a great facilitator? It isn't usually another certification, framework or book. It's the confidence that comes from stepping into the room, trying something new, making mistakes, reflecting, and getting a little better each time. The more I think about it, the more I believe...

Hey Reader, Next week, we're diving into animal welfare and why it is becoming an increasingly important topic for food and hospitality businesses across Asia ๐Ÿ‘€ From hotels and restaurants to retailers and food brands, more organisations are committing to cage-free egg sourcing and higher animal welfare standards. But what does that actually mean in practice? This session brings that into focus. We're joined by Dawn Neo from Global Food Partners, who will share how businesses are implementing...
